Senate President the Newest Co-Chair of Colombian Caucuses

ICCF Colombia is pleased to announce that H.S. Efraín Cepeda, the President of the Senate, has signed a commitment letter to become a co-chair of the Colombian Conservation Caucus and the Colombian Oceans Caucus.

During a roundtable hosted by ICCF Colombia on November 29, Senator Cepeda highlighted "Congress’s commitment to improve and facilitate conservation initiatives since there is considerable degradation of terrestrial and marine ecosystems in the country as seen in the Grand Swamp of Santa Marta, the largest and most ecologically productive lagoon in the country."

He also expressed of the roundtable discussion: "I feel profoundly pleased with the work of the Conservation Caucus, the Oceans Caucus, CAEL, and the Minister of Environment on these issues. The environmental and peace-building objectives of this group align well with those of the President of the Senate." He concluded saying, "Colombia was blessed with rich biodiversity. Its diverse terrestrial and marine ecosystems provide countless benefits for the people of Colombia."

The Senator is an industrial economist from the Universidad de los Andes and a specialist in high finance, with a degree from the same university. He has studied military studies, receiving the titles of Lieutenant of the Naval Reserve, Navy Lieutenant of the Naval Reserve, and Captain of the Corvette Naval Reserve. He is an expert in business administration and private sector finance and has had a career as a legislator since 1991 when he was elected to serve in the upper house of the Colombian Congress.

During the five terms that he has served in the legislature, Senator Cepeda has promoted laws related to the preservation of the family nucleus and the promotion of export industries. On conservation issues, Senator Cepeda has stood out for his work in seeking support for the preservation of areas like Ciénaga Grande de Santa Marta. In addition, during his term as President of the Senate, he has chosen sustainable development and reconciliation as slogans of the Senate leadership.
