ICCF-UK held a successful briefing this fall with world leading orangutan conservation groups to highlight the challenges faced by this incredible species from global deforestation and the illegal wildlife trade. In attendance were APPG chair Barry Gardiner MP and members Lord Grayling, Lord Gascoigne and Alex Sobel MP.
Experts from the Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation and the Chester Zoo briefed MPs on their work to rehabilitate orphaned orangutans and restore their habitat. They also discussed the role of UK supply chains in threatening the habitat of orangutans and many other critical species throughout their range. Following the presentations, the MPs were given virtual reality goggles to see these challenges up close.
Information presented during the briefing inspired MPs to include orangutan conservation in upcoming debates on global deforestation. They have also committed to working closely with their Indonesian counterparts to reduce deforestation in Borneo and call for stronger regulation in the UK on forest risk commodities
